What people have to say about Carmel Choirs:

John Williams, Former Principal

I am so proud of how our choirs represent our school. Every year hundreds of amazing students enjoy a chance to be a part of one of the premier choir programs in the country.

Bella Davis ’22

I had a fun experience In choir making memories with new friends. I had fun performing with all the other choirs and was sad when I graduated because I had fun and made connections with the directors and students – from my freshman to senior year of high school. I would love to do it again if I could. I still think about my time in choir nearly every day.

Carmel Choirs is a huge operation through which my student has gained valuable skills like organization, responsibility, teamwork, attention to detail, and self-confidence. She goes to school because she is so excited to go to choir class and work with the amazing teachers, coaches, and choreographers in a state-of-the-art choral department. Carmel Choirs offers the chance for students to become who they are meant to be by challenging them with high expectations and giving them real-world experience for not only musical careers but any career since the skills learned are transferable. My student enjoys the skill building and creativity that goes into each performance and she loves all of her teachers who inspire her every day. I highly recommend Carmel Choirs because it is an experience like no other you could find in a high school setting.

Carmel Choirs has become my family throughout the years. As I move through the program I have been granted the opportunity to grow as a musician and as a person. The choir department has lead me to create so many meaningful relationships, and I contribute my success in high school to my participation in this program.

My daughter is in her third year with the Carmel Choirs program and I cannot say enough positive things about the experience, both for her and for our family. Going into her freshman year, we knew she wanted to be part of the program but saw it as an activity that she would enjoy and learn from but not much else. What we have experienced is so much more than just an activity and it has far exceeded our expectations in countless ways. Choir is where she has found “her people” and is her home within such a large student body. It has increased her confidence, helped her know what it means to work hard in order to achieve her goals and dreams while respecting and working within a group and as a member of a team. The leadership, time, dedication and care that the directors put into helping their students grow not only as performers but also as people is awe-inspiring. Not to mention, every performance put on by the Carmel Choirs program is outstanding, unbelievably impressive and entertaining. We would absolutely recommend Carmel Choirs to any student with an interest in singing, dancing or both. There are many choirs at a variety of levels and there is a place for everyone.

We have 3 boys that over the years have been in 5 separate choirs. Their involvement has been such a huge part of theirs (and ours) high school experience. Our boys have not only learned from and enjoyed the choir classes and performances, they have made many of their best friends! we as parents have also met so many other parents and friends by being involved. The choir “family” is such a great way to make a large high school feel smaller!

The directors are top notch and they know many of their students on a personal level and care deeply about helping them become the best musicians and humans they can be. I cannot recommend this program highly enough!

Being a part of Carmel Choirs gave me lifelong friends, a home base during school, and the tools to succeed as a leader later in life. My experiences taught me how to be graceful under pressure, to be persistent, and gave me some of my absolute favorite high school memories. Going in it’s important to know that you truly get out what you put in and to remember to enjoy every minute!

I am so thankful for the Carmel High School choir program. My children have been exposed to CHS through summer camps, shows, halftime performances and more. I truly believe this experiences helped my son early transition this year as a freshmen and CHS choir has given him a group of peers where he feels accepted.

Tara Lacy ’18

It wasn’t until I graduated from CHS that I realized the immense impact Carmel Choirs had on my life in just four short years. The friends I made through the years have been people who have been by my side through highs and lows as I’ve grown up. Without the connections I made with my teachers and fellow choir students, there would be many opportunities I never would have had the fortune to partake in after graduating. I would strongly encourage everyone to put themselves out there and join Carmel Choirs. I can promise you’ll find a supportive environment to develop your skills and express yourself!

Sophie Miller ’18

My participation in Carmel Choirs has been a very rewarding experience. It has been, and continues to be, a program where I can truly grow in my knowledge and craft in music, it and allows me to enjoy the deep passion I have for it.

My son, Luke Curry, has been affiliated with the CHS Choir Department for all four years of high school. He evolved from the freshman boys choir to the Ambassadors’ Show Choir, Select Sound A cappella choir, and Greyhound Sound young men’s choir. I was happy to see him develop a similar kind of friendship and bond with his choir mates as he would have if playing on a sports team. He worked hard to develop his skills, he developed leadership skills, and he helped others to elevate themselves as well. I feel that what he has learned through his music experience can be used throughout his lifetime. He has developed confidence and character traits to put him on a successful pathway for life. As parent volunteer, I was able to observe the hard work and positive influence that his teachers had on him. It was a WONDERFUL experience!!

I have made a home in the Carmel choir program. It’s a close-knit family like no other program I’ve seen. Everyone strives to be the best that they can be, and not for selfish reasons, but for the good of the program. I’ve met some of my closest friends through the department. No matter how long of a break I take from the program or the people, I can jump back in and feel right at home.

When my daughter thinks back on her high school days, Carmel Choirs will be her first and favorite memory. Her experiences and opportunities with Carmel Choirs are truly unmatched. Through choir, she has found an incredible friend group that she loves. She has grown her talents and musicality in so many ways that has built her self-confidence and passion for music. She has had the opportunity to participate in professional-level productions and received incredible instruction in music, beautiful costumes, and choreography. Mrs. Kouns, Mr. Barker, and Mrs. DeBard are amazing instructors who take a personal interest in each student’s development as performers and people. They help their students excel and develop a lifelong love of music. Truly, Carmel Choirs has made my daughter’s high school experience. My younger daughter has participated in everything from Princess Academy to Half Notes and Summer Spectacular. She cannot wait to go to CHS so that she can join Carmel Choirs!

Carmel High School Choirs taught me not only advanced musicianship skills, but it also helped me become organized, more open-minded, and inspired me to become a music educator today. I am incredibly grateful for my time in a truly special place where children receive a multitude of opportunities that most kids across the nation do not get.

The choir program made an incredible impact on my daughter and our family. Not only were they supportive of her outside commitments, the directors also shaped my daughter into the young lady she is today. She gained many valuable friends and gained leaderships skills that will carry her throughout her life. Volunteering my time in the choir program allowed me to see behind the scenes and appreciate the dedication that the choir directors put into their students. You gain a deeper understanding and love of all things choir. I have also gained some amazing friends and will be forever grateful for that.

Being a part of the Carmel Choirs program was an experience unlike any other at Carmel High School. The tight-knit bonds I made and the family I was a part of were ones I’ll never forget. I was able to make so many wonderful memories in this program. It gave me something to be motivated and passionate about.

Jake Greene ’17

Carmel Choirs helped me grow into a more responsible person by teaching me skills like time management and leadership, in addition to bettering my musical abilities. Furthermore, I got to do it with people who would become my very best friends.

Choir has had a massive impact on all of my children. For my daughter Ella, being in choir all four years of high school helped her realize her passion for performing. The CHS choir program and the opportunities it provided gave Ella the training and confidence she needed to pursue degrees in Musical Theater and Dance at Anderson University. For my son Kenny, who is introverted and doesn’t like to be social, it’s very easy to get lost in the crowd at CHS. However, choir makes it so that my son feels seen, heard, loved, and challenged. The directors make it a priority to know each student and create a safe, close-knit, connected community that my son has grown to love. It is literally the only class in which he has thrived. Our youngest, a 7th grader with Down syndrome, has grown up watching big sister and big brother perform in choir and has absolutely loved it. She’s even had the opportunity to participate in some of the events Carmel Choirs has offered, such as Half Notes and the Summer Show Choir Spectacular camp. One of the best things about Carmel Choirs is that there is a place for everyone and Evie cannot wait to be a part of the program when she gets to high school.

Jake Letts ’17

The three years I spent in the Carmel choirs program had a tremendous part in shaping the person I am today. I learned how to be a part of a team and how to work with people of all different personalities and opinions to achieve a common goal: making beautiful music to share with the world. Being a part of the choir program helped me realize where my true passion is, and thanks to the help of the directors and supportive students, has set me on the path to be the person I have always wanted to be. Carmel choirs will always be home to me, and I hope that it becomes home to many more students as well.

Brooke Porter ’17

Choir gave me a sense of purpose and made me excited to go to school and be a part of something. The Accents and Kathrine Kouns were an amazing support system for me while I tried to navigate highschool and who I was as a person.

Jackie Hu ’16

Being involved in choir at Carmel built my confidence and gave me the courage to express myself.

Olivia Miller ’16

When I saw my first Holiday Spectacular in the second grade, I was inspired to be a part of the choral program. Although I joined to have fun and be a part of something special, I have also gained time management skills, coordination, close friends, and great memories.

Emily Tatum ’15

The Carmel Choirs Program challenged me in a way that was different than any other aspect of high school. It required me to think beyond myself yet remain internally motivated for excellence. The program provoked a passion and an appreciation for not only music, but also for Carmel High School in general. Through choir, I gained a great respect for the school as well as the Carmel community, both of which are strong proponents of the arts.

Amy Sevening ’96

I absolutely loved my time with Carmel Choirs and am so grateful for all of the talented and wonderful people I met throughout the program. Participating in the program taught me so much about hard work, dedication and how to work with a group of people to make the music come alive on stage. It was always so rewarding to see all of our hard work come together to put on a wonderful show. Joining choir helps your confidence, introduces you to a group of peers who have common interests, and the choir program ends up being your home away from home in high school. Choir helped me learn how to feel confident speaking in front of groups and taught me how to engage an audience which helped me throughout schooling and in the workplace. I graduated in 1996 and coming back to the high school and watching my daughter have the experience has come full circle and is such a blessing. I highly recommend being a part of Carmel Choirs!

Carrie (Getch) Gaerte ’92

Alumus & Choir Parent

Being a member of The Accents as well as The Ambassadors defined my time at CHS. Not only did I make lifelong friends, I developed skills such as time management, punctuality, confidence, and poise. I always felt that my choir was a family and the performing arts wing was my home. The high expectations for choir members both in and out of the classroom transferred into every aspect of my life. I was easily able to transition to college both academically and in my performance group at Purdue because I had been so well prepared at CHS. I am proud to say that my daughter is a 3-year member of Accents and is having the same experience all these years later. We have BOTH had transformative, dedicated directors leading with the upmost professionalism and kindness. I will always be grateful for our experience with Carmel Choirs.

Melissa Womer Finklea ’81

I moved to Carmel in the middle of my sophomore year and joined choir, as I had in my South Carolina high school. I was in Descants, then Accents and Ambassador crew, then Ambassadors as a senior. CHS choirs gave me an immediate group to be part of and instant friends. Lots of great memories!
